SATANA RAMADA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

In response to urban congestion, increasing number of art-skilled street children with lack of exhibition space and a lack of cultural spaces, this project aims to transform the Nakasero Market site into a vibrant cultural hub. The existing Nakasero Market area faces congestion, lacks recreational spaces and poor sanitation. Converting this space into a performing arts center addresses these issues, providing a much-needed relaxation area, offering a platform for local talent, and helping decongest the city center by reducing traffic during peak hours in the evening.

The project’s goal is to promote local culture, alleviate urban congestion, and create a safe space for street children to express their talents. Satana Ramada Performing Arts Center is a transformative project that seeks to unite culture, community, and urban development through the creation of a dynamic performing arts center.

The detailed breakdown of spaces includes a 500-seat theater, art galleries, workshops, rehearsal rooms, outdoor performance spaces, restaurant, parking and retail spaces for local artisans.

The concept is inspired by a tree, symbolizing Uganda’s artistic roots, and embraces ‘Harmony in Diversity,’ blending traditional Ugandan culture with modern design principles to create a functional and artistically engaging space.

Project entails an underground location of the theater and preserves external aesthetics while providing an immersive experience for users. An outdoor plaza serves as a vibrant gathering space, promoting cultural engagement. The building’s form preserves scenic views, enhances ventilation, and maximizes natural light, marrying modern design with environmental considerations. Dedicated exhibition spaces showcase Ugandan musical instruments and art, fostering a connection between the audience and local arts. Administrative offices, a mezzanine, and a lobby contribute to the seamless operation of the center. An English courtyard not only partially lights and ventilates the theater but also enhances the overall ambiance. In essence, the design harmoniously balances cultural celebration, functionality, and environmental consciousness, creating a dynamic space for artistic expression and community engagement.

In conclusion, the project holds the potential to significantly impact urban life and culture in Kampala by addressing congestion, providing cultural spaces, and nurturing local talent.
